Rethink Church Study Group

The Rethink Church team bases our ministry on the scripture reading from Matthew 25:35-40.  I was hungry and you gave me something to eat … thirsty and you gave me something to drink … a stranger and you invited me in,  I needed clothes and you clothed me … sick and you took care of me … in prison and you came to visit me… Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it for me.

Our purpose is bringing awareness of the many needs in our community and world and joining together as Disciples of Christ to meet those needs. Each month we focus on a specific organization. We promote and briefly educate each cause through video clips and guest speakers during our Sunday Ministry Matters Moments, and through articles in our monthly church newsletter and weekly worship bulletin. A few of the varied programs that we are involved with are as follows:

We support The Janesville School District Church/School Partnership program assisting Lincoln Elementary School, and Parker High School connecting to meet the needs expressed by the individual school. We have been able to contribute items such as food, clothing, hygiene products, school supplies, and bus tokens. We also have connected with opportunities to mentor through reading and lunch programs.

We maintain to volunteer with The Rock County Women’s Shelter helping most recently with inside and outside building and grounds maintenance needs. We have also sewn curtains, given handmade prayer shawls, hats and scarves, and furnish child care. Together with the women and children we have decorated cookies, made cards, and treats, shared meals, and fellowship.

Locally, we have been a long time giver to ECHO, (Everyone Cooperating to Help Others), a charity organization helping to meet temporary housing, food, transportation and other emergency needs for low-income families. We faithfully help to distribute Meals On Wheels, a service delivering nourishing meals to elderly and disabled persons in their homes. We participate yearly in our local CROP HUNGER WALK sponsored by Church World Service to raise funds to end hunger at home and around the world. We host the GIFTS Men Shelter several weeks out of the year, as it rotates from church to church, one week at a time providing meals, beds, showers and hope to homeless men.  We support A-OK, (Acts of Kindness), a service providing emergency assistance, food, clothing and cash to those with needs. We help Project 16:49 serving Rock County’s unaccompanied homeless teens by donations of funds, and wish list items. We have supported volunteers and needs of community programs such as local Nursing Homes for instance Cedar Crest, Huntington Place and St. Elizabeth’s Manor providing hymn sings. We have served outside the Janesville area giving monetary donations and helping with projects at the United Methodist Milwaukee Children Services of Wisconsin, serving children and families living in poverty in Milwaukee County

We continue to help world needs by donating our time, talents and gifts to the following organizations; Imagine No Malaria, which is a part of a global partnership to reduce malaria deaths, and the debilitating effects of malaria in Saharan Africa.  Also the Heifer International program which is an organization that works with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth. We have gone on mission trips for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) traveling to disaster areas caused by Hurricane Sandy, and also donating items for UMCOR cleaning buckets and health kits. We are making and baking bread to raise funds for Bread for the World, a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.
