Meals on Wheels

Food is delivered by Asbury UMC  to shut–ins for two weeks, twice a year. The Church delivers meals to those home bound, senior citizens, disabled citizens, and those who are in some way unable to shop or prepare their own meals.

Meals on Wheels delivers one meal a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  The program is overseen by the dietary staff at Mercy Hospital, who ensure the meals are nutritional fresh, tasty and varied.  In some cases we are the only contact the clients have with anyone for the day.  A smile and a short chat are sometimes a big help to the person receiving the meal.

To volunteer, contact Joan or Tina at the Church Office, phone 752-7961 or by e-mail asburyumc@charter.net

Mission Trips

Groups are periodically formed to work in a specific area helping out with projects.  From 2015 – 2017 the Youth Group worked in Rock County, Wisconsin on various projects while growing in faith together.

The Adult Group  has helped in UMCOR’s work with  Hurricane Sandy clean-up in 2013.  In 2014, they went to the towns of Brookport and Unionville in southern Illinois which received great devastation from tornadoes in November.  In 2016, they worked in Milwaukee helping out with repairs in a church and parsonage.

2017 found the group in Chatham, IL volunteering at the Midwest Distribution Center fixing sewing machines, bicycles, preparing clean-up buckets, sorting supplies and helping where they were needed. Here are some of the recent group that worked at the distribution center:

Prayer Shawl Ministry

In 2007, two women of Asbury UMC started the Prayer Shawl Ministry with an invitation to anyone who could knit or crochet to join them in creating shawls which are then given as gifts of hope, comfort, healing, peace and love.  Since then, we now have 6-8 women creating shawls and others who donate yarn.  Six shawls are delivered each month to Mercy Cancer Treatment Center.  Shawls have been given to folks in 6 area health care centers.  Shawls are available for members and friends to share as hospital and home visits are made.  Approximately 100 shawls are created and gifted each year.  This ministry blesses many–those who pray as they create, those who pray as they give and those who receive the warmth of our love and prayers.
